15 cubs, along with Baloo and Skipper, set off on a beautiful sunny day at Narrabeen to learn the basics of handling a canoe. The course is run by the Region Water Activities Team, and covers all the requirements of the Level 1 Canoe Badge. Included are a swim in clothes and a PFD (personal flotation device, once known as a life jacket), capsizing the canoe and swimming it to shore, paddling techniques, and launching the canoe. After the basics we headed off for a a paddle. We had lunch near the caravan park, and paddled back to the starting point for afternoon tea and to pack up. We hope to put these skills to good use in the upcoming Sirius Cup canoe races.
